4 Tips on Keeping your New Year's Resolutions

Setting New Year's resolutions is the easy part. Keeping them can be a lot more difficult.

Each year, millions upon millions of people make a resolution for the new year, from going on a diet to saving more money. But did you know that after 6 months into the new year, less than half of people continue to stick to their New Year's resolutions?

I get it! It's hard! That's why I've come up with a few tips to help you stay on track with your New Year's resolutions all year long!

  1. Write Out a Detailed Plan

Writing down your goal will help you not only remember it but allow you to visualize it in a concrete way. Seeing your plan laid out in front of you can help you set a realistic timeline and realistic expectations for how to go about completing your overall goal.

Write down every little detail. If your goal is to work out more, write down how many times a week you're going to go to the gym, what type of workouts you're going to do, what time of the day you're going to do them, etc. The more detailed you are, the more likely you are to fit those new workout plans into your schedule.

Most importantly, make sure to be realistic about your goals. If your goal is to work out more, but you never really work out at all, try setting a small goal first - like to go to the gym once a week and work out for 30 minutes. Then, gradually increase it based on what you think you can accomplish.

If you start off by saying you're going to go to the gym 5 times a week, you're less likely to continue working towards your goal because it's just too much to handle. Remember, it's okay to start small. The idea is to maintain your goal throughout the year, not get overwhelmed by it in the first few months.

  1. Plan for Obstacles

Things happen, and plans don't always go accordingly. You're bound to experience a few obstacles on your path, but that doesn't mean you should quit working towards your goals.

Maybe you didn't go to the gym last week because you had to work late, or maybe you had a cheat day and ate things that weren't in your planned diet. That's okay. Life happens. The important thing is to not let these obstacles get the best of you. Sure, you didn't hit that small goal you wanted to, but next week, there's a new small goal that you still can hit.

Most importantly, don't beat yourself up over it. If you're still focused on achieving your long-term goal, the small obstacles won't matter. What matters is that you continue trying.

  1. Tell Your Friends & Family

One of the best things you can do to help you achieve your goals is to tell your friends and family about them. They can help you stay on track and keep you accountable for your goals. And they can be a much needed support system.

If you know someone who's also trying to accomplish a similar goal as you, ask them if you can work towards it together. Trying to accomplish a goal, like working out more, can be a lot easier if you have someone who's willing to do it with you.

  1. Reduce Stress

Your own state of mind has a huge impact on your future resolutions and goals. If you truly believe you cannot accomplish it, then you are setting yourself up to do just that.

If you believe you can and will accomplish it, no matter the obstacles, you're bound to do it. Believing in yourself is crucial.

It's also important that you feel good while working towards your goals. If you find yourself stressed out about them, consider setting smaller goals. Working towards reaching your goal should make you feel good, not overwhelmed or stressed.
