What Is Micellar Water?

When it comes to washing your face, there are a lot of different products out there that you can use. What you choose mainly depends on your skin type. But there are a few products out there that work for all skin types. Micellar water is one of those.

Micellar water is a type of facial cleanser that contains tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules known as micelles. These micelles are attracted to dirt and oil so they work efficiently to draw out impurities without drying out your skin. This makes it useful as, not just a cleanser, but a makeup remover and moisturizer as well.

What are the benefits of using micellar water vs. other cleansers?

1. It's good for all skin types.

Micellar water is extremely versatile and well-suited for all skin types. It's free from alcohols and other harsh ingredients that can really irritate your skin, making it extremely beneficial for people who have sensitive or severely dry skin.

2. It's gentler on skin.

Surfactants are surface-active agents that work to get rid of dirt on your skin, and they can be found in many soaps and cleansers. The issue is that some of these surfactants can be really harsh, leaving your skin feeling dry or irritated. Micellar water uses nonionic surfactants that are much gentler on the skin, making your skin less likely to dry out or become irritated.

3. It can help keep your skin hydrated.

Most micellar waters have components that are hydrating and can assist the skin with retaining more moisture. Glycerin is an ingredient commonly found in micellar waters and is a natural moisturizer that is also found in our skin. Glycerin works to ensure that our skin maintains healthy hydration and help protect against skin irritation. If you have severely dry skin, glycerin can really help.

4. It can help keep your skin clear.

Micellar water is an ideal solution for acne-prone skin. It can help decongest blocked pores, reduce inflammation and irritation, and help reduce breakouts without drying out your skin.

5. It's convenient.

Micellar water acts as a triple threat - a cleanser, makeup remover, and moisturizer. This can help eliminate the need to have multiple products in your bag, helping to reduce clutter and free up space.

Micellar water also doesn't need to be rinsed off which makes it great for when you don't have direct access to water while traveling, etc.

Though micellar water can help keep your skin hydrated, it's still important to follow it up with a moisturizer that works specifically to lock in moisture and other necessary nutrients.

How do I use micellar water?

For cleansing or removing makeup, simply saturate a cotton pad and apply directly to the face. There's no need to rinse unless you're doing a double cleanse. If you are double-cleansing, simply rinse and dry, then follow it up with your facial cleanser of choice. Then, continue your skincare routine as normal.

You can even use micellar water for other things too. Your makeup brushes tend to have dirt and oil buildup from using them on your face. Instead of purchasing a separate makeup brush cleanser, use your micellar water instead.

**Fun Fact: Micellar water was initially created in the 1900s in France when plumbing wasn't widely available and the water was known to be quite harsh on the skin.
