Why Skin Feels Fragile in Summer
Three things many of you have written to me about. And what actually helps.

Over the years, many of you have written to me about the same three things. None of them are dramatic. They're small, daily moments that you've started to notice in your sixties and seventies and beyond, and you've wondered if you're imagining them.
You're not.
Each one is its own story, with its own cause, and its own thing that helps. I want to walk through them honestly, because most skincare writing talks about aging skin in vague terms like "loss of elasticity" or "compromised barrier." That's not useful. Here's what's actually happening, and why summer makes it worse.
Observation 01
A bruise on the back of your hand you don't remember earning.
What's happening, and why Vitamin C is the most studied answer.
As we age, the small blood vessels (capillaries) closest to the surface of our skin become more fragile. The walls of those vessels weaken, and the connective tissue around them thins. A small bump that wouldn't have left a mark at 40 leaves a clear bruise at 65. Sometimes you don't even notice the bump.
Summer makes this more visible for two reasons. First, the skin on our hands and arms is exposed more often (short sleeves, gardening, errands), so bruises get noticed more. Second, heat causes mild capillary dilation, which means small amounts of bleeding under the skin spread further and look darker.
Of all the daily skincare ingredients, Vitamin C has the strongest research connecting it to capillary strength. It's a key part of how the body produces collagen, which is the structural material that supports blood vessel walls. Topical Vitamin C used consistently over months supports the integrity of those small surface vessels.
It won't make a bruise disappear once it's there. But over time, daily use is associated with fewer of them.
Observation 02
A flush after a glass of wine or a walk in the heat that lingers far longer than it used to.
Why the redness sits, and what shortens it.
Younger skin has a stronger barrier and a faster vascular response. When something causes a flush (alcohol, heat, sun, stress, a hot shower), young blood vessels dilate quickly and constrict back to normal within minutes. As we age, the dilation still happens, but the constriction takes longer. The flush stays.
Summer compounds this in three specific ways. Heat itself triggers vascular dilation. Sun exposure causes low-grade inflammation under the surface. And dehydration (which happens more easily in summer at any age, but especially after 60) thins the skin's protective barrier further.
Vitamin C addresses this from two angles. It strengthens the skin barrier over time, which means external triggers don't reach the vasculature as easily. And it's anti-inflammatory at the surface, which helps the flush settle faster when it does happen.
A practical note: apply your Serum to cool, dry skin in the morning. Not warm-from-the-shower skin, which is already in a mildly dilated state.
Observation 03
A pink stripe across your cheekbones after only twenty minutes outside.
Why mature skin reacts faster to UV, and the daily layer that helps.
Two things change with age that make UV sensitivity more pronounced. The skin's natural pigment cells (melanocytes) reduce in number over time, which means there's less built-in protection against UV. And the skin's repair systems slow down, so the same amount of sun exposure produces a more visible reaction.
This is why a sun stripe across the cheekbones (the area that catches the most direct light when you're walking, driving, or sitting outside) shows up faster after 60. Twenty minutes that wouldn't have left a trace in your forties leaves a clear mark now.
Sunscreen is the first defense, always. But sunscreen blocks. It doesn't repair or strengthen what's underneath. Vitamin C is the layer that does. Applied under sunscreen each morning, it's photoprotective at the cellular level, which means it works with your SPF to reduce the visible effects of UV exposure on aging skin.
It also helps fade the marks once they're there. Slowly, over weeks of consistent use, the brightening effect evens out pigmentation that summer has brought to the surface.
What ties them together
The three things at the top of this piece look like three different problems. They share a root cause.
All three are about the skin's structural support weakening over time. The capillary walls. The barrier function. The protective pigment systems. As we age, these support structures don't fail, they just don't have the same reserves they used to. Summer reveals the gap because summer asks more of the skin than any other season.
Vitamin C addresses all three because it works on the underlying structure, not the surface symptom. It's a building block for collagen. It supports barrier function. It's photoprotective. It's the rare ingredient where the science actually connects to all three observations.
This is why our Vitamin C Serum is what most of our long-time customers reach for in summer specifically. Not because summer is when actives are most needed, but because summer is when the absence of them becomes most visible.
It may not make you 40 again. But it helps the skin you have now feel more like itself.
Our Vitamin C Serum, used daily, is what supports the skin underneath what summer brings forward.
