Oil-Based vs Water-Based Vitamin C Serum
Most Vitamin C serums are water-based. Ours is water-free and oil-based. Pure Vitamin C is delicate, so formulas use different approaches to keep it stable. An oil-based serum also feels different: it glides on and absorbs in, which many women with dry or mature skin prefer.
Side by side
| Water-based serums | Noche Y Dia (water-free, oil-based) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main base | Water | No water |
| Feel | Thin, often slightly sticky | Silky, glides on and melts in |
| Vitamin C forms | Varies by brand | Ascorbic acid plus oil-soluble ascorbyl isostearate |
| Added oils | Varies | Bitter orange, lemon and kiwi seed oils |
| Bottle | Varies | Glass |
Why the base matters
Pure Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is known to break down when exposed to water, air and light. That is why many brands use stabilizers, special packaging or tinted bottles. Our approach is to leave the water out entirely and pair pure Vitamin C with an oil-soluble form of Vitamin C.
Why texture matters too
Water-based serums can feel thin and sit on the surface until they dry. An oil-based serum feels silky and absorbs in, which many women find more comfortable, especially as skin gets drier with age. Customers often tell us it "melts right in."
How to tell what you are buying
- Check the first ingredient. If it is "aqua" or "water," the serum is water-based.
- Look at the Vitamin C form. Ascorbic acid is pure Vitamin C. Other names are derivatives.
- Notice the packaging and keep any Vitamin C product closed and out of heat and sun.
Is oil-based Vitamin C better than water-based?
