Small Business Saturday takes place each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this event encourages consumers to shop small.

1. Who invented it?
In 2010 American Express came up with this holiday. The holiday was designed "in support of small, independently owned local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy, and invigorate neighborhoods across the country." Congress made this day an official holiday the following year, in 2011. According to a study this year, American Express has discovered that "76% of consumers prefer to shop online to avoid germs." They also found that "60% of consumers plan to do over half of their holiday shopping online this year."
2. How many are there?
The Small Business Association found that there are "30.2 million small businesses in the United States." That means you have plenty to choose from!
3. How much money is spent on this day?
According to the Small Business Administration, "American consumers spent $19.6 billion at independent retailers on Small Business Saturday" last year in 2019.
4. Why do small business matter?
Small businesses employ 47.5% of the country's workers. Additionally, according to the Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 67% of new jobs created!
